10 ways to optimise your Instagram bio

Writing a good Instagram bio might seem straightforward, but with only 150 characters to play with it requires some thought and creativity.

Follow my Top10 Tips to make your bio count:

Tip 1: Optimise your Instagram name

To create a good Instagram bio make sure the Name Field is optimised with your name and/or a searchable keyword.

Instagram considers the name and username fields in search queries so, as an example, if you are a fitness coach or PT, add your name and use keywords that describe your niche which potential followers might search for. Although note you are limited to 30 characters, so use them wisely.

Tip 2: Highlight what you do

A good bio will tell people what you do, who you are targeting and how you can help them in a clear and concise way – remember the 150-character limit here. For example, if you only train women and specialise in pre-and postpartum fitness, make sure to include it so you target the right audience.

Tip 3: Include keywords:

Including keywords in your name and username will ensure you are featured in search queries. Whilst the bio isn’t searchable, including keywords will help you describe concisely what you do (see point above) and ensure you are connecting with the right audience.

Tip 4: Use a bio link tool

A tool like Linktree can help drive traffic to your website or blog. Using Linktree enables you to host multiple external links in your bio without having to continually update it every time you post a new blog or promotion. It allows you to link to all your most valuable assets from one place.

Tip 5: Add your contact details

Adding your contact details makes it easy for profile visitors to contact you. You can include your email address, phone number and a physical address which will encourage new visitors and followers to reach out to you.

Tip 6: Add a clear Call to Action (CTA)

As you can only include one link in your bio, use a strong CTA to let profile visitors know what’s in it for them if they click your link. E.g., get my free 6-week program👇

Tip 7: Add your location

If it's relevant to the service you offer, include the city in which you are based, or the geographical location your business operates, as this can help drive buying decisions.

Tip 8: Make your bio easy to read

To make your bio easy to read use a list format – this helps to make the information more digestible; and include emojis to focus the eye and break up text.

Tip 9: Don’t use random hashtags

Whilst a branded hashtag might help drive engagement if you are running a UGC (User Generated Content) promotion, avoid using random hashtags. They serve no purpose and can, by clicking on it, drive profile visitors away from your profile to a competitor.

Tip 10: Choose a high quality profile picture

First impressions count and as your profile image is seen across Instagram, make sure it’s of a high quality.

Once you've updated your profile bio and you are happy with it, don't forget about it. Revisit it from time-to-time to make sure it's still working for you.
